PUBLIC NOTICE: US GOVERNMENT DISCONTINUATION OF THE PENNY
Effective immediately, the United States Treasury Department has ceased production of the one-cent coin (“penny”). As a result, the Federal Reserve Bank is no longer supplying pennies to depository institutions.
Northeast Georgia Bank is no longer able to obtain pennies through the Federal Reserve System.
We are sharing this information so our customers—especially retail and merchant partners—can prepare accordingly and make any needed adjustments to their business operations and cash-handling practices.
What You Need to Know
• While Northeast Georgia Bank will continue to accept pennies for deposit, the Bank will be unable to provide pennies in change orders or coin shipments once current inventory is depleted. Since we are unable to replenish our stock of pennies, we cannot guarantee availability.
• Businesses are encouraged to review pricing and rounding practices to the nearest five cents to minimize operational impact.
• Deposit activity will be unaffected. The Bank will still accept pennies in deposits.
• Any customers with unused supplies of pennies are encouraged to deposit rolled pennies so we can maximize availability for as long as possible.
